Carport and permit
A carport counts as an ancillary building. Whether it is permit-free mainly depends on where it stands.
- In the rear yard area
Often permit-free, within the rules of the Buildings Decree (Bbl), including those on height and the built-up area of the yard. - Next to the house, visible from the street
Often requires a permit. A side yard does not always count as rear yard area; that depends on its position relative to the public road. - At the front of the house
Almost always requires an environmental permit, and the municipality then also carries out a design review. - Listed monument or protected town or village scene
For a national monument you need an environmental permit for the national monument activity (Environment and Planning Act). In a protected townscape the environmental plan may set extra rules. Always check first.
We check in advance, free of charge, what is allowed in your situation. If a permit is needed, we can also take care of the application on request.

Frequently asked questions
Q01Do I need a permit for a carport?
That depends on the location. In the rear yard area a carport is often permit-free, within the rules on height and area. Next to or in front of the house, visible from the street, an environmental permit is usually required, and for a national monument a permit for the national monument activity. We check this for free in advance.
Q02What is on a construction drawing for a carport?
A site plan showing the location on your plot, a floor plan, the elevations and a section, with dimensions, heights and materials. Where needed, a structural calculation of the posts, beams and foundation is added.
Q03What does a construction drawing for a carport cost?
The price is on request, because every carport is different. You receive a fixed price in the quote in advance for exactly the parts you need.
Q04What is the difference between a carport and a canopy?
A carport is a canopy for the car, often next to or in front of the house. A canopy or veranda usually stands in the garden, at the rear. For the rules, the location matters most, not the name.
Q05Do you also draw a carport against the garage or the house?
Yes. We draw freestanding and attached carports. For an attached carport we draw the connection to the facade and check whether the existing wall can carry the load.
Q06Do you work across the Netherlands?
Yes. We draw remotely, based on your photos and measurements, and the drawing can be used for the permit application anywhere in the Netherlands.
