§01 The difference

Estimate versus structural calculation

A structural calculation is a certified report that demonstrates that your beam, floor, extension or foundation safely carries the load. At Tekenpunt the calculation conforms to the Eurocode and Building Decree and is suitable for the permit application. A qualified structural engineer delivers it from €700, typically within 1 to 2 weeks.

A contractor will often call for a beam by gut feeling ("just use an HEB 160"). Drag the line and see the difference with a proper Eurocode calculation, where the correct beam follows from load, span and verification. That is the difference between a guess and a permit-ready justification.

§02 Anatomy

What the structural calculation covers

A structural calculation demonstrates step by step that your intervention can handle the loads. Here is what it includes.

Step 1

Load assumptions

We first map out what loads act on the structure: self-weight, floor and roof loads, snow, wind and the variable load per intended use. All in accordance with the Eurocode load standards.

  • Permanent and variable loads separately
  • Snow and wind load by location
  • Load combinations according to NEN-EN 1990
EC0 · EC1
Step 2

Schematic diagram

The intervention is translated into a structural model: spans, supports, hinges and fixings. Here we determine how forces travel through the structure before a single number is calculated.

  • Static model with bearing points
  • Spans and load transfer clearly mapped
  • Force diagram: bending moment, shear force, reaction
CALCULATION MODEL
Step 3

Structural calculation beam

The governing beam, lintel or column is sized. We calculate the acting bending moment and shear force and select the section (HEA, HEB, IPE or timber beam) that passes the check with an adequate margin.

  • Section selection HEA / HEB / IPE or timber
  • Check for bending, shear force and buckling
  • Unity check below 1.0
UGT · STRENGTH
Step 4

Deflection assessment

Strong enough is not the same as stiff enough. We check deflection in the serviceability limit state, so floors do not bounce and walls or plasterwork do not crack.

  • Deflection checked against L/250 or stricter
  • Vibration sensitivity assessed for floors
  • Comfort and damage limitation guaranteed
BGT · DEFLECTION
Step 5

Bearing and foundation

Where the beam lands, the load must continue. We calculate the bearing, the bearing area and the transfer to the existing wall or foundation, and whether it can handle the additional weight.

  • Bearing pressure on wall or column assessed
  • Load transfer to foundation checked
  • Advice on reinforcement or foundation pad if required
BEARING
Step 6

Calculation report

Everything comes together in a signed report: starting points, diagrams, calculations and conclusion with the chosen profile. This is the document the municipality requires for your permit.

  • Full substantiation and design assumptions
  • Conclusion with profile and reinforcement
  • Signed, Eurocode- and Building Decree-compliant

From diagram to structural justification

The structural calculation report consists of fixed sections: the diagram, the loads, the calculation and the detail. Click through and see what is included.

CALCULATION MODEL

The structural diagram

The basis of every calculation. The intervention translated into a structural model: the span, the bearings and the way the forces run through the beam.

  • Spans and bearing points documented
  • Load transfer visualised
  • Basis for bending moment and shear force
EC0 · EC1

The loads

What bears down on the structure: self-weight, floor and roof loads, snow and wind. Combined in accordance with Eurocode to the governing load per metre.

  • Permanent and variable loads separately
  • Snow and wind loads per location
  • Load combinations NEN-EN 1990
UGT · BGT

The calculation

The core of the report: the acting bending moment, shear force and deflection. The profile selection follows from the check, with a unity check well below 1.0.

  • Strength check (ULS)
  • Deflection check (BGT)
  • Unity check per profile
DETAIL 1:5

The bearing detail

Where the beam bears on the existing wall or column. We show the bearing area, any steel plate and the transfer of the load to the foundation.

  • Bearing pressure verified
  • Steel plate or pad footing where required
  • Load transferred to foundation

Why use a certified structural engineer

An online calculation tool or a contractor choosing the beam by intuition will not stand up to municipal scrutiny. This is the difference.

      §09 How it works

      From data to permit-ready report

One dedicated point of contact, a tight schedule and no surprises. We typically deliver the calculation within 1 to 2 weeks.

      STEP 01

      Submit your details

You send us your drawing or sketch, the spans and what sits above and beside the intervention. If anything is missing, we will give you a quick call of around 15 minutes. A fixed-price quote the same day.

      STEP 02

      Schematising

We translate the intervention into a calculation model: spans, bearings and load transfer. Here we determine how the forces run before any figure is calculated.

      STEP 03

      Calculate

Loads according to the Eurocode, followed by checks for strength and deflection. We size the beam, lintel or column with a unity check well below 1.0. Bearing and foundation are checked as part of the process.

      STEP 04

      Report

Everything comes together in a signed calculation report: starting points, diagrams, calculations and conclusion with the chosen profile. You receive it for review and can ask questions.

      STEP 05

      Permit-ready

The definitive report in PDF, Eurocode- and Bbl-compliant and ready for your permit application. If the municipality has further questions, we clarify the calculation.

      §10 Questions

      Frequently asked questions

      Q01When do I need a structural calculation?

Whenever you remove a load-bearing wall, load a floor or roof, add an extension or roof extension, or alter the foundation. Not sure? We check it free of charge.

Q02What does a structural calculation cost?

A single calculation (1 wall opening or beam) starts at €700. A full residential property is around €1.295; complex steel structures can run up to €2.000.

Q03Is the calculation suitable for the building permit?

Yes. The calculation is Eurocode and Building Decree compliant and is accepted by the municipality for the permit application.

Q04Do you also handle the drawings?

Yes. You can combine the drawing and calculation with us, so they align seamlessly with each other.

      Q05How long does it take?

We typically deliver a structural calculation within 1 to 2 weeks, separately or together with the drawings.

Q06Do you work across the Netherlands?

Yes. We carry out the calculation remotely and it is valid across the Netherlands for your permit application.
