What you get from us
Everything needed to make the roof opening safely and to connect the roof lantern properly.
Roof plan
The position and dimensions of the roof lantern in the roof surface, with the distance to the roof edges and the roof drainage.
Trimming
The new beams around the roof opening: how the load of the interrupted roof joists is taken up.
Section and details
The upstand, the insulation and the connection of the roof lantern to the roof covering.
Structural calculation
The calculation of the trimming, the bearings and, if needed, a steel beam, according to the Eurocode.
Existing and new situation
For an existing roof we draw both, as the municipality requires for a permit application.
Roof lantern and permit
A roof lantern in a flat roof is often permit-free, but the structure must always be right.
- Flat roof at the rear or on an extension
A small opening between the existing roof joists is often permit-free under the Bbl. If roof joists of the main load-bearing structure are interrupted, you are altering the main load-bearing structure: that is a technical building activity, which requires an environmental permit. - Listed monument or protected town or village scene
For a national monument you need an environmental permit for the national monument activity (Environment and Planning Act). In a protected townscape the environmental plan may set extra rules. Always check first. - Intervention in the load-bearing structure
The structure must always comply with the Bbl. If roof joists are interrupted or the opening is large, a structural calculation shows that the roof remains safe; that calculation is also part of the permit application. - New extension with a roof lantern
Then we include the roof lantern in the drawing of the extension and it falls under the same permit check.
We check in advance, free of charge, what is allowed in your situation. If a permit is needed, we can also take care of the application on request.
What does a drawing for a roof lantern cost?

Frequently asked questions
Q01Do I need a permit for a roof lantern?
That depends on the structure. A small opening between the existing roof joists is often permit-free. If roof joists of the main load-bearing structure are interrupted, you are altering the main load-bearing structure: that is a technical building activity, which requires an environmental permit. For a national monument a permit for the national monument activity is required. We check this for free in advance.
Q02Do I need a structural calculation for a roof lantern?
If roof joists are interrupted or the opening is large, yes. The trimming must take up the load of the roof. We calculate this and draw it out.
Q03What is on the construction drawing of a roof lantern?
The position and dimensions in the roof surface, the trimming, a section with the upstand and the connection to the roof, and for a permit application the existing and the new situation.
Q04What does a drawing for a roof lantern cost?
The price is on request, because every situation is different. You receive a fixed price in the quote in advance.
Q05Can a roof lantern be added to an existing extension?
Usually yes, if the roof allows the opening. We look at the existing structure and draw how the opening is made safely.
