Working from home, but without enough space
A family in Almere Haven had a garage unit at their property that was no longer being used for a car. The owner worked partly from home and wanted to convert the unit into a quiet, separate workspace. The question was whether a building permit was required for this. In Almere, certain plots are subject to different rules under the zoning plan. In addition, the garage had a concrete floor finish that did not meet modern insulation requirements for a habitable room.
02 · Our approach
Zoning plan checked, ready to get started
We verified the applicable zoning plan for Almere Haven and confirmed that the renovation fell within the permit-free category. We then designed a simple but effective layout: a work alcove with built-in storage, underfloor heating on the existing concrete substrate and a roof window for natural light. The facade drawing was delivered so the contractor could order the correct window frame type to match the character of the residential area.

Home office that feels like a real workspace
Because no permit procedure was required, the renovation could begin within a few weeks. The garage is now a bright, quiet workspace of 16 m² with ample storage. The owner works there daily without distraction from the rest of the family. The step from garage to workspace proved simpler than expected: good drawings made the difference. The contractor had no questions and the work was completed in two weeks.
