01 · Challenge
Attic too low for a room, plot width limits ridge options
The terraced house in Goverwelle had an attic space with a maximum standing height of 1.6 metres. The owner wanted to turn it into a bedroom for their eldest child, but the existing ridge height made that impossible. The property stood in a row without mutual dividing walls above the gutter, which meant that the ridge raising had to be fitted with extreme precision to guarantee watertightness and avoid construction errors.
02 · Our approach
Ridge raising of 60 cm with additional roof light
We raised the ridge by 60 centimetres while keeping the roof pitch unchanged. At the same time we designed a roof window on the rear facade of the new roof structure, so that the attic room would also receive natural light without requiring a dormer. The details of the connections to the neighbouring properties were fully worked out. The municipality of Gouda assessed the application positively after a brief additional explanation about the ridge profiles of adjacent properties.

16 m² with daylight and a central standing height of 2.2 metres
After the ridge raising, the attic floor has 16 m² of usable floor area with a standing height of 2.2 metres in the central part. The roof window at the rear lets in a great deal of light. The building permit was granted in 6 weeks. The contractor replaced the roof structure in five working days and the clients were able to furnish the new bedroom just two weeks later. The property has increased noticeably in value.
