01 · Challenge
A bold outdoor retreat beside a terraced house in Breda
The owners of a semi-detached house in Breda-Noord wanted a covered outdoor space that matches the lifestyle of the neighbourhood: warm, robust and sturdy. The property is located in an expansion district with a uniform block pattern and the aesthetic regulations here are relatively flexible for outbuildings and canopies at the rear. Nonetheless, the custom work in the timber species and connection details required careful elaboration in the drawings.
02 · Our approach
Hardwood with a curved roof plane
We designed a veranda in finger-jointed azobe hardwood, with a gently undulating roof plane in bituminous roofing that connects to the existing eaves of the house. The posts are founded on driven ground anchors so that no concrete blocks are visible in the garden. The rear of the veranda has been left open, allowing the space to also serve as a passage point to the rear garden. Side panels can be added later if the owners wish for more enclosure.
03 · Result
Immediate start, solid end result
The 16 m² veranda was installed in three days by a local Breda contractor. The result is a bold, dark-coloured canopy that visually extends the garden and makes outdoor living possible all year round. The owners are particularly pleased with the choice of hardwood, which improves with age. Tekenpunt provided all the execution details needed for a flawless installation.
